Porur Sannidhi murai

The next slokam is on muruga perumal…I did not find the meaning of these slokams. So Sangu (my sis) and I went ahead and wrote the correct wordings and meaning by asking appa and amma. Please excuse in case there are any discrepencies. Also it would be great if someone who reads this can tell us if anything is wrong and how to correct it.

All pooja procedures

I have found my dream site. I have always wanted to the procedures of all the poojas. I never found the right books. Finally amma told me that casettes were available. I went hunting. Dint find what i wanted.

May Mother — Who is known as Annapurna, Who is the ruler of Kaasi, Who helps with benevolence and support, Who endows various jewels and precious stones, Whose apparel is a white cloth, Who has breast-pots which are adorned by a long shining necklace of pearl, Who is scented in the woods of Kaasmira, and Who endows interest — gives me food as alms.2

May Mother — Who is known as Annapurna, Who is the ruler of Kaasi, Who helps with benevolence and support, Who endows the bliss of Yoga, Who endows the ill-health of enemy, Who endows interest in Dharma and Artha, Who has resplendence like the waves of the sun, the moon and the fire, Who protects the world, and Who endows all the desired worldly wishes — gives me food as alms.3

May Mother — Who is known as Annapurna, Who is the ruler of Kaasi, Who helps with benevolence and support, Who is the earth, Who is ruler of all the humans, Who is the Goddess, Who is the Mother, Who fulfils our diet-needs, Who has a headress on cloud-like black braid of hairs, Who gives alms of food continuously, Who provides bliss to everyone, and Who always causes auspicion — give me alms.6
May Mother — Who is known as Annapurna, Who is the ruler of Kaasi, Who helps with benevolence and support, Who describes everything from the beginning to the end, Who takes Shambu into the three states, Who is the Goddess of Kashmiraa, Who is the ruler of the three worlds, Who is like the three waves, Who is the immortal sprout for the world, Who is present in every woman, Who incites the feeling of desire, and Who causes the rise of persons — give me alms.7

moon and the fire, Who has a complexion of the sun and the moon [a mix], and Who holds a garland, a book, a whip, and a stick — give me alms.9

O Annapurna, Who is always complete, Who is the dear one of Shankara! O Paarvathi! Give me alms for the purpose of knowledge, renunciation, and attainment of perfection. My mother is Paarvathi, my father is Maheshwara (Shiva), my friends are the devotees of Shiva, and my motherland is the universe.11

The family song is follwed by another vinayagar thuthi. All these are tamil songs…and I never knew that until recently. I never bothered to know the language or the meaning. used to just sing it because it felt nice. Now along with that nice feeling I feel much better as atleast I know what I am singing.

Ganapathi sthothram – thirupughazh

Next we sing the thirupugazh. We call this our family song. All of us know this song and it somewhat servers as a union. More then it being a prayer to God, i love it because it reminds me of my family and times we have spent together. We even sang this song together during our family meet this year at Big Banyan tree…it was a great time…long live our relationships

appamodu avalpori: appam (a sweet dish made of rice, flour and brown sugar), puffed rice and fried rice

kappiya karimugan: these dishes are devoured by the elephant-headed God, GanEshA;

adi pENi: (That GanEshA’s) feet will always be worshipped in their mind;

katridum adiyavar: (if they say) "for us the learners and Your devotees,

buddhiyil uRaibava kaRpagam: You reside in our intellect, Oh Giver, like the wish-yielding KaRpaga Tree (in the Heavens)"

enavinai kadidhEgum: then, their karmas will flee.

maththamum madhiyamum vaiththidum aranmagan: He is the Son of SivA, who is adorned with Umaththam flower and the crescent moon;

maRporu thiraL buya madhayAnai: His shoulders are broad like those of a fierce elephant ready for a wrestling bout;

maththaLa vayiRanai: His pot-belly is like a maththaLam (big drum);

uththami pudhalvanai: and He is the Son of virtuous PArvathi.

mattavizh malar kodu paNivEnE: I shall worship Him with fragrance-dripping flowers.

muththamizh adaivinai: The entire Tamil language, with three branches, (literature, music and drama)

muRpadu girithanil muRpada ezhuthiya muthalvOnE: was written by You, the Prime worshipful One, at the foremost hill (of Meru)!

muppuram eriseydha: The one, who burnt down the Thirisiram,

acchivan uRairatham acchadhu: Lord SivA, his chariot’s axle

podiseydha athidheerA: was smashed to pieces by You, Great Warrior!*

aththuyar adhukodu subbira maNi: Being tormented by love for VaLLi, Your younger brother Subramaniam

padum appunam adhanidai ibamAgi: was roaming in a cornfield where You appeared as an elephant;

akkuRa magaLudan acchiRu muruganai: that KuRava girl VaLLi and Your younger brother Murugan

akkaNam maNamaruL perumALE.: got married by You that very moment, Oh Great One!

* When SivA started off on His chariot to invade Thirisiram, He failed to take the clearance of GanEshA, who is the Remover of all obstacles. The chariot’s axle broke into pieces. Later, SivA sought the permission of GanEshA formally, and so succeeded in burning away Thirisiram.

Sainathaashtakam

I am surprised. I had been to shirdi, and i dint find this slokam book even there. But i am sure that thathaa has not composed this slokam as i found a telgu font version of it on the internet. but i did not find the meaning or wordings anywhere on the net (except for the one in telgu).
If anyone knows the meaning, i would love to have it.

Pathri grama samudhbhootham dwarakamaayi vasinam
Bhaktha beeshta pratham devam sai natham namamyaham

I salute that Lord Sai,
Who was born in Pathri village,
Who lived in Dwarakamayi,
And who fulfilled desires of devotees.

Mahonnatha kule jaatham ksheerabdhi same shubhe
Dwijarajam thamoknantham sai natham namamyaham

I salute that Lord Sai,
Who was born in a great caste,
Who is a good as the ocean of milk,
Who was a great Brahmin , and dispelled darkness.

Shri Sainatha Mahima Strotram

The next stotram that we sing is the Shri Sainatha Mahima Strotram. This is also sung at Shirdi during the time of the arthi. There are a few lines at the end that we recite. i am not sure if thathaa himself added those lines or if they are part of some other slokam…or..i donno…but i did not find the emaning of those lines. But we say those lines also in our bhajanai..
These stotrams really drive me nostalgic….thanks to God that i still get to sing these stotrams.

Sayiroopadhara raaghavottamam, Bhakta kaama vibhuda dhrumam prabhum

Lord Sai is the avatar of Raghav (Incarnation of Ram), the Lord who fulfils the desires of His devotees for the purification of their infatuated and deluded hearts and minds – to whom I pray, day and night, untiringly and blissfully.

Lord Sainath, the canopy of your mercy is like the intense lusture of the autumn moon. Grant the cool shade (from that canopy) from the blazing heat of the three-fold calamities of life to those who have taken shelter at your feet.

Upaasanaa Daivata Sainaatha, Sthavairmayopaasaninaasthu sthatwam
Ramenmaromne tava paadayugme bhrungo, Yathaabji makarmda lubdhah

Lord Sainath you are my God, whom I worship. I extol your praises. Let my mind dwell lovingly at your lotus feet, just as the bee hovers over the lotus flowers enticed by the desire of honey.

Aneka janmaarjita paapasamkshayo, Bhavet bhawatpaada saroja darshanaat
Kshamaswa sarvaanaparaadha poonjakaan, praseeda Sayeesa Sadguro dayaanidhe

Lord Sai, Guru Ocean of compassion, bless me and pardon me for all my innumerable faults. May my boundless sins which have accumulated over several cycles of life be destroyed by the darshan of your feet

Sri Sainatha charanaamrita putachithaah, Sthwatpaada seva natrataah satatamcha bhaktyaa
Samsaara janya duritaagha vinirgataaste, kaivalya dhaama paramam samavaapnuvanti

Those whose minds become purified by the nectar of tirth (Water deemed to be Holy from the washings of Lord’s feet) of Shri Sainath, those who are constantly absorbed in His service with – devotion they get freed from the distress caused by worldliness and attain salvation.

Strotrame tatpatte bhakthyaa yonara athanmanaahsadaa
Sadguroh Sainaadhasya kripa paatram bhaveddhruham.

Whosoever always recites this hymn with devotion and absorption will certainly be the recepeint of the grace of Sadguru until he lives.

Sai Ashtotram

After the invocation (Ganesh pancharatnam), we chant the sai ashtotram. we chant both the shirdi sai and satya sai ashtotram.
Ashtotram are said to be the 108 different names of God….i dont agree so much… i would rather say the 108 titles of the particular God we are trying to invoke…the terms I am using sound so crude… :(
Sahasranamam are 1008 names/titles of God.
Had been to shirdi last weekend. Felt great. now putting in the ashtotram. could not get the meaning of the shirdi sai ashtotram. But found satya sai shtotram meaning.
