Sravanam Keerthanam Vishnoho Smaranam Paadasevanam
Archanam Vandanam Dasyam Sakyam Atma Nivedanam
Bhakthi or devotion is described in 9 ways in the Vedas. These nine forms of bhakthi have been taken care in the compositions of Thyagaraja. His compositions are gems.
You can find below the list of bhakthis and the Thyagaraja’s compositions that describe them.
Sravanam- The listening to glory of God comes first.

Naanoru vilayattu bommaiya….a classic composition in Tamil language. Very simple language and s short and sweet song. It is not one of the peppy songs that I normally like. But it is a great melody. Also, since I understand the meaning, it becomes easier to feel the bhavam when I sing it.
The song is composed in the raagam navarasa kanada (pronounced as Kaanada). The composer of the song is Papanasam Sivan. He has composed a lot of great Tamil devotional songs.
Taalam: aadi

Bantureethi kolu (sometimes pronounced as bandureethi)is one more song in the peppy carnatic collection that i have (thats how i call it).a very nice song. The tempo and the pitch of the song are very catchy. Its again a Telgu song composed by Thyagaraja. This was one of the songs that i wanted to learn. Finally I learnt it from my teacher. I enjoy singing it.
Raagam HamsanAdham.
Talam: Aadhi

This is one more peppy song. I am a fan of this song. However, I feel it sounds extremely good with the pakkavadhyam (instruments). I heard the song by Balamuralikrishna. It was awesome. The starting and stopping of sangathis (paragraphs) is just too good. I also try to sing it the same way
. I want to sing it once with the mridangam.
The lyrics of the song are as below (picked from http://www.geocities.com/promiserani2/c1435.html )

“Sri chakara raja simhaasaneshwarai…”… this was a song that mum and dad used to sing to us when we were babies to put us to sleep. I did not know too many lines of this song. Somehow the first two lines that had registered in my mind seemed to be nice. I liked the tune. I also had this sentimental attachment to it because of the listening to it in childhood. So I decided to research the song a little and then learn it.
I also got an opportunity to listen to the instrumental snippet of it, played by Kadri Gopalnath. It was too good.

I have been listening to marugelara sung by M L vasanthakumari. Nice base voice. It suits my voice also. have been attempting to learn it. It would have been better if there was some chittaswram. Anyway, I like it.
It is in the raagam jayanthishri.
Aa: S G2 M1 D1 N2 SAv: S N2 D1 M1 P M1 G2 S
This is a Janya raagam. It is born out of the nata bhairavi raagam which is the 20th melakartha raagam.

I love this song Niravathi sukhadha. I heard it from a student of my teacher during the thyagaraja aaradhanai. It was just too nice to hear.
I generally love the songs that are sung a little fast. i am one who tries to keep the interest of non- carnatic music lovers also. So i would like the peppy stuff more…thats what i call it. not that the other songs are not good. But i prefer these.
Niravathi sukhadha is one such marvel.

Aarohanam and avarohanam are the pattern in which the swarams will fall in a particular raagam. Aarohanam is how the swarams will raise and avarohanam are the pattern inwhich the swarams will come down.
e.g. lets again take mayamalavagowla
aarohanam: S R G M P D N S
avarohanam: S N D P M G R S
R – shudha rishabham
G – Anthara gandharam
M – Shudha madhyamam
D – shudha deivatam
N – Kakali nishadham

Now let us look at what is Raagam.
Each swaram is just one single musical note. When we sing a set of swarams together, it forms a raagam. However, not any combination swaram is a raagam. Certain swarams will not sound fine if they are sung one after the other. Only some combinations of the swarams or sounds will actually be pleasing to the ear.The order of swaram is very important. There are many different raagams. Each raagam has a unique combination of the swarams.
