Aarohanam Avarohanam
Aarohanam and avarohanam are the pattern in which the swarams will fall in a particular raagam. Aarohanam is how the swarams will raise and avarohanam are the pattern inwhich the swarams will come down.
e.g. lets again take mayamalavagowla
aarohanam: S R G M P D N S
avarohanam: S N D P M G R S
R – shudha rishabham
G – Anthara gandharam
M – Shudha madhyamam
D – shudha deivatam
N – Kakali nishadham
so when mayamalavagowla is sung, always the swrams have to ascend in the particular pattern mentioned. and only those variants of the notes must be used that are mentioned in the aarohanam and avarohanam.
Since mayamalavagowlam is a melakartha raagam, it has all the seven swarams. If it was a janya raagam, it would not have all the swarams.
