I was just browsing the net for some musical stuff….and I found this ultimate article on http://www.raaja.com/music.html. This is illayaraja’s official website. There was this beautiful article on "A primer on sruthibedham by hari Govindan". it was a little high level for me. but I am sure a deep music lover would like it. It hasa combo of western and carnatic. he has related the two so well and explained.i feel it is a must read to atleast know that such things also exist in music.

Talam has to things, a lagu and a dhritham. Lagu is where the palm is tapped once and then the fingers are counted rhythmically starting from the little finger. Dritham is when the palm is tapped once then over turned and tapped once and again the tapping of the front is repeated followed by the tapping of the palm after over turning it (don’t know if my explanation actually gives a picture of what I mean).

In anything that we learn, we must follow a proper sequence (if there is one). This will lead to strong fundamentals. Only if we have a strong foundation, we can be sure of good learning as we go ahead. This is true for carnatic music as well.
