Yenna thavam

Mother Yashodha…..what penance have you performed to get this…
A beautifully written song in tamil. It has been my dream to learn it. Dont ask me if the song is so difficult and I really needed someone to teach me…I have already mentioned in my blogs previously that I am not very good at music. No inborn talent flows out of me…so whatever i sing is just out of practise….
Now my teacher is teaching me this one…not singing it too well yet…the bhavam is the most important for this song. The expression is as important as the wordings. We must really mean what we sing….only then the feeling will reflect and only then does the song really seem beautiful.

The song has been composed by papanasam sivan
Its in Kaapi raagam
Aa: S R2 M1 P N3 S
Av: S N2 D2 N2 P M1 G2 R2 S
which is a janya raagam of Karaharapriya(22nd melakartha). Talam is aadhi.

I remember from my faint memories that once in the saptaswarangal program on TV, they had said that the song from the movie bombay, kuchi kuchi rakamma….that one is in Kaapi raagam.(hopefully my memory is good). Now from karnatik.com i also know that kadhal rojave from the movie roja is also from this raagam….nice….I like this song:)
When i tried to google for kaapi raagam i got too many results for this show…http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCsNdWOnNpQ
its kind of a western touch with kaapi raagam …fusion kind off…its nice…I did hear a bit of the kadhal rojave song in this fusion…so i guess it is the kaapi raagam…nice fusion:)

The songs goes as below (taken from http://www.karnatik.com/c1007.shtml)
[ I would suggest looking at the lyrics into Karnatik.com only because many other websites do not give the second charanam]

The meaning of the song goes as below

What penance did you practise or perform Yashodha?
That the all pervading and Almighty himself calls you mother…
anupallavi:
The one who created the 14 worlds;
to lift him into your arms, to rock him to sleep, to feed him milk … what kind of penance have you performed?
caraNam 1:
O mother what kind of penance have you performed that even Bramha and Indra and envious that you could tie Krishna who is the almighty to the grinding stone and bind his mouth and make him beg you for mercy!
caraNam 2:
What great sages like Sanakaa achieved through great penance and yoga, what they reached by prodigious effort, you achieved so easily
