Chandrakauns Vs Hindolam
I am not a great talent in music…so finding the ragam of a song by just listening to it is something that amazes me. To me, these people who can do this…are geniuses…..
No Jokes….
I have always wanted to listen to a song and then say… this is this ragam…this has got a connection to this one etc etc etc…but that seems to be quite a far of dream for me…
However…I did achieve something…an achievement in my own terms for the goals that I set for myself….
a few days back I was simplay trying to play any song on the internet related to carnatic music…I by chance found this purandara Dasa’s devarnama…kandena Govindana…. I listened to it and somehoe concluded that it was hindolam….
Then I browsed for the song and found that it was not hindolam…but chandrakauns…
A ragam that I had never heard of and more of a hindustani ragam…obviously I was disappointted. Anyway…i went to further find out what were the swarams in this ragam….and guess what I discovered…..Chandrakauns and Hindolam just differed by the Nishadha….
So I was quite close…that I call as an achievement….
So…When I did some research …I found a lot of interesting things that I did not know before…
I did not know the Ranjani- Gayatri who were a carnatic pair. They are very good. they sing a lot of songs that are a little hindustani oriented.
I am not a real enjoyer of hindustani music. but I really enjoyed what these people sangin margazhi mahotsavam.
Thanks to U tube…. U can check this song at http://in.youtube.com/watch?v=ssRRqdXlcAo&feature=related which is in chandrakauns ragam.
chandrakauns ragam is a janya ragam from Keeravani which is the 21st melakartha.
the ragam goes like this
aarohanam: S G2 M1 D1 N3 S
avarohanam: S N3 D1 M1 G2 S
Hindolam on the other hand is a janya from natabhairavi whish is 20th melakartha.
aarohanam:S G2 M1 D1 N2 S
avarohanam:S N2 D1 M1 G2 S
Some very famous kritis in this ragam are mamavathu sri saraswathi and samaja vara gamana
The hindustani equivalent of this ragam is called malkauns
Its called an audava ragam because it has only 5 notes
I am not even sure if people actually compare these two ragams….but I am doing it..because i found a high similarity in them…
I suddenly have changed my outlook towards music….theory and fundamentals are iportant and there is so much to learn….this is what will help in really understanding music.. I have started treating music as another person and trying to understand it…hope I am able to go ahead and continue my learnings the way I want
