Its not just about carnatic

I was watching some shows on TV where people participate for music competitions….I was suddenly struck by a thought….if you are a carnatic expert, if your basics are strong…can you go on to these competitions….????

Its a yes and a no….

Atleast thats what is my opinion….I’ll tell you why…

be it a hindi channel or a south indian language channel ( I have checked tamil, malayalam and kannada channels)….I see one thing…singing a movie song is a little different from carnatic….



Vijayaambike

Vijayaambike is a song that is composed in the Raagam Vijayanagari.

Vijayanagari raagam is derived from the 59th melakartha raagam called Dharmaavathi.

Av: S D2 P M2 G2 R2 S

Talam: Aadhi

This keerthanam was composed by Mutthaiah Baagavathar and is dedicated to goddess Chamundeshwari. This song is supposed to be in Kannada language (I thought it was sanskrit)…

I also read that the Vijanagari raagam was a finding Mutthaiah Baagavathar himself.

Sarasijaakshulu

This is a song that I had learnt a dance for…the dance was shabdam…

Its nostalgic…I just found this song by chance over the net and I kind of got back all my memories of bharathnatyam…could not stop myself from posting this song

The song is sarasijaakshulu….
this song is in Raagamaalika [not sure...some places I see it is kamboji...would be great if someone can clarify]with Triputa thalam.
This song describes the leelas or playfulness of Krishna with the Gopika girls



Sri Mahaganapathi

This is one of my favorite songs….it suits my base voice…and kind of a  dream song because I always felt it was a tough one and I managed to sing it…self back patting u know…:))  



Sri Jaalandhara

This post is about one of the biggest and most lively songs I have learnt…..Sri Jaalandhara
This a beautiful song in the Gambeera nattai raagam.



Maragathavalli

This was a song that I leanrt twice. Once from my first teahcer and then re-learnt it when I changed teachers.



Thelisi Raama

As promised in my previous post…here comes another beautiful composition in poornachandrika.

Thelisi Raama is composed by Thyagaraja.
