Vidajaaladura

I have been writing the last few posts on songs with raagas that are janya from Dheera shankarabharanam….
here comes one more in the line….

This post is about the song Vidajaaladura composed in the janaranjini raagam.
Janaranjini is another deritive of shankarabharanam.

This song has a funny history in my life. When I first learnt this song I hated it…mainly because I was never able to sing it right. Then I joined a new class…this new teacher used to arrange Thyagaraja aaradhanai every year in which all students got to sing on stage…
yes…you guessed it right…this was the only Thyagaraja song that I knew for the first event after I joined. So she insisted that I sing it. Practised like crazy…This was my first stage performance for carnatic music and that too with instruments….whew…kinda a dream coming true
It was not that big a deal…but it was for me…
so thats when I realized that the song was not really as bad as I thought it was :)

So…Now more about the song ..
As already mentioned…Composer was Thyagaraja

The meaning and notes can be found at http://www.ecse.rpi.edu/Homepages/shivkuma/personal/music/vidajaladura.htm

Just for convinience, I have put the meaning here also

Listen my Lord, to this assurance of mine. My mind may be tossed about violently by despicable desires causing emanciation of my body, but it will never let go its hold of your sacred feet. Whatever the tasks I engage in, whatever the sights that confront me, however disagreeable, I regard them all without repugnance as your dispensation, O God worshipped by Tyaagaraja

I Could not find much more interesting facts and ideas about this raagam. Also could not find too many songs composed in this raagam. Will post stuff if I find anything else thats interesting.
