Maragathavalli

This was a song that I learnt twice. Once from my first teahcer and then re-learnt it when I changed teachers.

One of my first high pitched songs too….I was not very fond of it as it hit quite a low pitch at certain places and very high at certain places….obviously…my voice was not flexible enough to reach these extremes and so I did not like it.
But when I learnt it the second time, I learnt a lot of nuances in the song and now I am proud to say that I am able to reach both pitches quite decently and also sing the sahithyam well even at places where the swaram is a little faster

There are certain areas in the song (the third sangathi of the pallavi in particular) where the sahityam (or the actual song) requires quite a twist of voice to bring about all the notes clearly. Initially this was a challenge…now I have achieved it and I am proud

This song is composed in the Kambhoji raagam which is a janya from Harikambhoji of the 28th melakartha

Aa: S R2 G3 M1 P D2 S
Av: S N2 D2 P M1 G3 R2 S N3. P. D2. S
Talam: Aadhi
Composer: Muthuswami Diskshitar

Pallavi

maragatavalleem manasaa smaraami
madana janakaadi devaa paalini

Samashti charanam

hari hridayaa veshineem mohineem
hari hara putra jananeem nalineem
kroora daityaadi brindaa mardhineem
guruguhaadi nuta vanni vaasineem

If one dint know….Guruguha is the mudra of Dikshitar…all his songs would end with this as Thyagaraja’s songs would end with Thyagaraja

Not finding the meaning of the song

the famous song from the movie Saraswathi sabadam ….Kalviya selvama veerama was composed in this raagam
This raaga is supposed to be very soothing and good for expression of moods of love, passion and tenderness.
It is aslo a raaga that is used in general for commencement of any auspicious occassions.

Another thinsg about this raagam…if you notice….the parent raaga has N2 and Kambhoji has N3. Hence N3 is an anyaswaram. This makes it a Bhashanga raaga that borrows one swaram from elsewhere and not from its parent.
The list of songs in this raagam is too big…I dont know any composer who has left out this raagam.
