Sri Mahaganapathi

This is one of my favorite songs….it suits my base voice…and kind of a  dream song because I always felt it was a tough one and I managed to sing it…self back patting u know…:))

Sri Mahaganapathi is a song composed in the gowla raagam. This is the same raagam as that of  the pancharatna krithi dhudukugala…again…one more favorite of mine…
According to me…the highlight of this song is its chittaswaram which is very different from many regular songs.
You could have an idea how the song sounnds by listening to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BnqkvPgXDBQ

It is a janya of the Mayamalavagowla which is of 15th melakartha.

Fantastic work Vidhya. I feel I have a voice like yours (reading all your posts for the past couple of months) but that does not mean I might be able to sing as well as you could. But I need some help from you, I am still a beginner and I would like to learn some songs. I would really appreciate if you could tell me some songs , easy to learn and suits base voice. Like ML Vasantha Kumari "vandanamu raghu nandana" etc..that would be a great help.

First of all….thanks a lot for reading my posts…. I am very happy that it is of some use to you:)

second…..I am not too sure how well I sing…but it was still flattering. I dont think I sing too well…..but I know one thing… I am much better than what I was….:))

Since you have asked me for some advice (altho I dont know if I am the right person to suggest)…. I would give you my opinion.

If you know Kannada…or if you like Devarnaamas by purandara dasa ….
    there are some….like Kandena govindana…
these suit base voice…and easy to learn…..also have good meaning.
Devarnaamas are generally short sweet songs.

To develop voice as well as a good musical sense (sangeetha gnyanam is what they say)….then you must and shoulod learn a lot of varnams.
Also….if you are a beginer….to train your voice…sing all the sarale varase in AA kaaram…
that is; sing aaaaaaaaa instead of S R G M P D N S….of course the AA kaaram should be as per the notes of the Sarale varase. I hope you got my point…..(if not please let me know and I shall try to explain better)

These things are fine to train your voice…but whne someone asks you to sing…you will not know a song:)….I used to face this… I wanted to be able to sing songs….and not bother too much about the rest…then…

If you would like to go more classical and sing keerthanams…you could learn some keerthanams in amsadhwani (somehow…I found them pleasing and easier to learn)
    Vatapi Ganapathim
    Vinayaka

You could also learn Maha ganapathim…short sweet and easy to learn

    the others are
    Kanjadalayadhaakshi – in kamalaamanohari raagam
    Sriman narayana – Bowli raagam
    Varadaraajamu – Saaranga raagam

I would sincerely advice that you try and practise the higher and lower pitches as they are very important especially if you need to sing non carnatic (for example, movie songs)

All the best….hope I was of some help.
Will also try to pu some posts on the songs that I have mentioned in the near future
