Yesudas concert – Pancharathna Kriti

This post is a continuation of http://blogs.prashu.com/music-and-me/content/2009/04/00374/yesudas-concert-some-music-tips.php

Right after this was a request for Endaro mahanudhaavulu…..

For those who don’t know…

This song is one of the 5 pancharatna keerthanams of Thyagaraja. These will be a part of every Thyagaraja aaradhana.
Pancha ratna means 5 gems. This is a collection of 5 keerthanams….these are a little different from the normal kritis or compositions….
In these, there is a pallavi, anupallavi and several charanams. The singing would be done for the charanams by first singing the swaram (notes) and then the sahityam (lyrics).

The Pancharatna Kritis are:

Jagadananda Karaka – Naatai raagam
Dudukugala – Gowla raagam
Sadhinchene – Arabhi raagam
Kanakana Ruchira -Varali  raagam
Endaro Mahanubhavulu – Sri raagam

Here is some very interesting information from wikipedia…. I dint know this all this while…its amazing
The melodic forms of these compositions (Nata, Gaula, Arabhi, Varali, Sri) are the five Ghana ragas of Carnatic music also called the ghanapanchaka. They are so called because they are suited to playing tanam on the veena. Nata and Varali are the most ancient of the Carnatic ragas and date back 1000 years.

A particularly difficult musical challenge has been taken up successfully by Tyagaraja in three of these compositions. The raga Nata has a particularly distinctive use of the ‘dhaivatam’ note or swara. Tyagaraja has avoided the ‘dhaivatam’ completely in the first pancharatna kriti without losing the swarupa of Nata ragam. Similarly ‘gandharam’ is an accidental note of some beauty in Gaula. Tyagaraja avoids this too (except in one instance) without losing the character of the raga. Finally, he avoids the accidental ‘dhaivatam’ in Sri ragam, again a note that is present in some very characteristic sancharas of this raga. It requires musicality of a very high order to do something like this not once but three times in very common and much loved ragas like these.

In this post we talk about the last of the pancharatna kritis which was sung by Yesudas in this concert.
This composition by Thyagaraja is unique as it is more dedicated to great people rather than gods themselves
The line : "ENDARO MAHANU BAVULU ANDARIKI VANDANAMULU" means "Salutations to all the great men in this world"
In this poem, Thyagaraja described the greatness of the devotees through the ages. He pays his salutations to the great men who live in all the ages, a yogi attains and enjoys paramananda by reaching the stage of samadhi when in the course of sahasra chakra the power of kundalam and maheswara are joined together from where at flood of nectar is released. In the soundarya Lahiri, Shankara Bhagwat Sahesrarey praises ambal as “Padma Sahahasi, Padya Vihase”. True devotees are persons who have attained this stage.

This is composed in the shri raagam.
This is another inetresting raagam in which many of the famous songs have been composed.
This is another karaharapriya (22nd melakartha janya)
