Shri Guruguha – Shuddha Saveri

One very small and nice song is Shri guruguha.
you can listen to Aruna Sairam sing this song at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dv2thJg3Loo

But there seems to be a lot of debate on if this is composed in raagam Devakriya or Shuddha Saveri. What I know is Devakriya is the same raagam as Shuddha Saveri…it is the name given for the same raagam in the Dikishitar mela system.

Its a very simple but nice song….short and sweet.
Raagam: Shuddha Saveri
Thaalam: Rupakam
Parent Raagam: Dheera Shankarabharanam (29th Melakartha)
Composer: Dikishatar

Aa: S R2 M1 P D2 S
Av: S D2 P M1 R2 S

The hindustani equivalent of this raagam is Durga.

Just for a clarification….this is different rom the Saveri raagam. The difference is in the avarohanam. Saveri has all the swarams in the avarohanam.

Another famous and short and sweet song in the same raagam is kaalaharana. Aanalekara is a geetham in this raagam.

Lyrics and meaning of the song Shri Guruguha is as follows:

Pallavi:
shri guruguha thaarayaasu maam sharavanabhava
surapathi shripathi rathipathi vaakpathi kshithipathi pashupathi sevitha

Charanam:
raagaadhi rahitha hrudhaya vibhaavitha suramuni poojitha
thyagaadhiraaja kumara thapathraya hara kumara
bhogiraja vinuthapaadha bhoodheva kriyaamodha
yogiraaja yoga bhedha yuktha manollaya vinodha

Meaning ( from http://www.medieval.org/music/world/carnatic/lyrics/TKG/shri_guruguha_tarayashu.html)

Lord Guruguha, born in the lake Sharavana, come quickly and guide me. You are attended on by Vishnu, Cupid, Brahma, kings, and Lord Shiva.

You are contemplated in the hearts of those devoid of passions. You are worshipped by the celestials and the sages. The song of the great Tyagaraja, oh Kumara, you dispel the three kinds of afflictions. Your divine feet are extolled by the serpent king, and you take delight in the religious rituals performed by the righteous ones. You, the great Yogi, take delight is the minds of sages who perform Yoga and Rajayoga.
