Maa Janaki – Kambhoji
A nice Thyagaraja composition. I would not say it is my favourite….but yes…it is a beautiful song reminding us of Janaki…This song kind of depicts the phrase ” There is always a woman behind every man’s success” ![]()
Thyagaraja here tells us how it was actually through Sita that Rama gained the great name….. She could have done a lot of things herself as she was a Pathi vrata and she had immense powers…but she dint. she sat at the Ashoka vanam and cried and waited for so many years for rama to come and rescue her. …..
i like these kinda compositions ![]()
I have written a post on Margathavalli (http://allyouwannaknow.net/musicandme/2009/03/11/maragathavalli/) which is also composed in the same ragam
Sarasijakshulu is another beautiful song in this ragam (http://allyouwannaknow.net/musicandme/2009/03/17/sarasijaakshulu/)

Meaning:
Pallavi:
You (reffering to Lord Rama) have become a famous king only by taking the hand of my mother Janaki (Sita devi)
Anupallavi:
O lotus eyed emperor! Listen, the great name that you have got for having killed Ravana and brought peace is also because of mother Janaki
Charanam:
She came with you to the forest, being a shadow without disobeying your command, she remained with Fire-God (in Her true form)
she went with rAvaNa – the demon and remained at Lanka under the ashoka tree
She did not reduce him (rAvaNa) to ashes by her eyes by getting enraged by his words,
did She not bring great fame to you alone?
