Malai saathinaal – marriage songs

Singing songs is a part and parcel of the hindu tamil Brahmin wedding. There are a lot of traditional songs that have come down ancestrally. These are composed with the thought that the bride and bridegroom are the god and godess themselves.  The songs are short and rythmic….They add to the absolutely enthusiastic atmosphere of the wedding…. I love them.

There are different songs that suit the different traditions of the wedding. the songs are sung in accordance to the ceremony that is ongoing.

Here is a song that is sung during the malai mathudhal….or exchanging of garlands

maalai saathinaL kothai maalai maatrinaaL
maaladaindu madilarangal maalai avarthan maarpilae
maiyalai thaiyalaL maamalar karaththinaaL…poo..(maalai)

Rangaraajanai anbar thanga nesanai
Aasi kooRi boosarargal pesi mikka vaazhthida
Anbudan inbamaai AanDaL karaththinaL..poo..(maalai)

The instrumental of the song in maadhaswaram can be listened to at
