Ragi thandira – Purandara dasa

Long ago I had learnt a Purandara dasa’s devarnama for a competition. I never seemed t get the song right and so finally did not sing it in the competition. After many years I came across this song in Vishaka Hari’s sundara kandam.

It is a very simple song with a lot of meaning. The song seems to be sung in various different raagams and hence I am not listing anything in particular here

Talam : Adi
Composer : Purandara Dasa
Language : kannada

Pallavi

rAgi tandIryA bhikShakE rAgi tandIryA
bhOgyarAgi yOgyarAgi bhAgyavantarAgi nIvu

Charanam 1 :

annadAnava mADuvarAgi anna chatra vaniTTavarAgi
anya vArteya biTTavarAgi anudina bhajaneya mADuvarAgi (Ragi)

Charanam 2 :

Guru gala sevEye mADuvarAgi gurutige bAhOranthavarAgi
Kare kare samsArava nItavarAgi purandara viTTalana sEviparAgi

You can listen to it in the Revathi ragam sung by Bombay Jayashree at  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMQ4hY0dm0w
A little aalapanai also included and so you can get a feel of the intense reegam.

being righteous, good and lucky one
    anupallavi:
Being the one who donates food
Being the one who gives away food to lot of people in charity
Being the one who has stopped talking incorrect or words that are not righteous
Being the one who does bhajan every day
    Charanam:
Being the one who serves his guru
Being the one who can be idolized
Being the one who has been able to take care of his life’s activities well
Being the one who serves lord vittala
