Today’s project management class taught me something really enjoable….Yani’s music…
seems strange!!!…but its true…

I love to see these kind of performances where the music is good….everyone is highlighted ….and there is so much of energy and passion filled when they play the music….it is simply amazing…

The music played with passion automatically is pleasing and sounds great…..I cant explain it….you must watch it if you have not….

Amma was mentioning this song today… I have never heard it before. It seems she heard it on TV and she wants me to learn it. So as usual, as the first step I looked into the internet for details. I was surprised to find immediate details.

Play songs on keyboard

My sister wanted to play a lot of songs on the keyboard and kept asking me for the notes of songs. unfortunately… I am not a great mucisian…(no where even close to the word musician…forget about being great)…and so I could not decipher the notes when a song was sung.

Google always comes to my rescue:)… so I found a nice website for her…

I founf the information amazing. the lessons are divided into parts. but one must be passionate to have the patience to go through so much info. Its a lot….but it is worth knowing if you really want to know carnatic music.

Wonder kid in south India

We have heard of a lot of wonder kids….how they have special abilities…

I myself have spoken about one such Romanian kid’s singing in http://www.allyouwannaknow.net/musicandme/2008/11/18/ghita/

I found one such on the internet. There is this small girl…..who is learning carnatic music…and she has this incredible knowledge…or power….orjust listening capacity…whatever pone may call it….she can identify the raagam of every single carnatic song.
She identifies the raagam of some songs where the raagams are very complicated. It is Go’s gift.
This kid is from south India…

The kid is also able to figure out the exact swarams when an aalapanai is sung. This is a big this for a small kid of her age.
The videos also show how innocent the kid is…playing with stuff in her hand…but she has this incredible talent.
Interesting….

I will take 2 whole lives to do this I guess

Neeraval & Thanam

Neeraval is another kind of improvisation in carnatic music. Here, the singer sings one line of the song repeatedly with different notes…of course maintaining the raagam, the rhythm…

Thanam is usually sung as part of the central ‘ragam-tanam-pallavi’ piece. Thanam has no thalam as such but has a distinct rhythm. The music is usually in the medium tempo. The singer can introduce complicated rhythmic patterns in counts of 3, 4, 5, 7 and 9 while singing thanam. Syllables such as tanamta, anamdamta, nomtomta and namta are often used. As these syllables are sounded, Anandam (bliss) is said to reverberate in the listener’s ears.

Alaapanai and kalpana swaram

Aalapanai and kalpana swaram are 2 of the aspects of carnatic music where the musician shows his creativity and level of training in a particular raagam.

Aalapanai comes normally in the beginning of a song. Here the musician improvises gradually from a lower note in the raagam and goes ahead setting a mood and stage for the song he is going to sing. Aalaapanai is normally a sung in a slow tempo going up to a medium tempo. It is always sung without pronouncing the swarams…..only the sound ‘aa’ is used.

Kalpana swaram is sung in between the anu pallavi and charanm or at the end of all the charanams. Here, it is similar to the aalapanai…however, the notes (swarams) are sung and the tempo goes from slow to very fast.
