Sunday night we got a call from one of our relatives. One of us (my mom in law or me) was being invited to the sumangali prarthanai at their place. It is a ceremony performed before or after any auspicious occasions. What is this function…that will be a separate blog….
Mom in law asked me to go…. I was excited…but I needed a 9 yards saree which I dint have. (mine was at mom’s place)….and I also dint know how to wear one.
My mom in law offered her saree. I dint have a blouse for it. I managed to pick a blouse that kind of looked similar.
About 2 months ago I had tried learning how to wear the 9 yards saree. So I kind of wanted to try to wear it myself when given a chance. I dint remember all the steps….
So I gave a call to amma….. Next was a half hour drama over phone…..
She was telling me what to do and I was trying to do it.
After all the trying…the final output dint look like a proper madisaaru (the 9 yards saree tying is called so) at all.
So I decided to go to the venue and ask someone to help me out.
Monday morning I was at the venue…..someone helped me wear the saree….it still looked funny on me as I dint have a matching blouse and also the saree was a little smaller than 9 yards and so dint fit very well. However, I managed….
It was nice. This was my first such experience.
We were 4 married ladies and one kanya girl…we were served lunch on banana leaves. After that we were given milk, buttemilk, and a mixture of sukku and chakarai…then came jiggery water….
Then we were given vethalai pakku with all the other items like blouse piece, mehendi cone, kumkum, turmeric etc etc.
After that we changed out of the costume. Now we were all geared up to serve food to the rest of the people. It was fun.
The best part was I dint know anyone around there. They were all new to me. But we got along well….
It was fun…..
Got to know so many more people….
Deepavali has been quite event full.
